Recently I have read many comments on Twitter saying, "Why panic? It's just the flu". Lets crunch the numbers which anybody can google for themselves. I am going to use the USA in this example.
The CDC (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention) tells us that each year somewhere between 9-45 million people will get the flu. This results in between 12,000-61,000 deaths per year. If 12k out of 9m people die, that is a mortality rate of 0.13%
Lets compare Corona. As of today, there are almost 100,000 confirmed cases and 3,200 deaths. This is a mortality rate of 3,2%
So Corona is about 25 times as deadly as the regular flu strains.
If the US has a quiet Corona flu season, the 9m bottom end of the scale, that means 12k x 25 people will die. A total of 300,000.
Now here's the bit most people don't understand. Corona is asymptomatic.
What does that mean?
Okay, so Gramps gets the flu. He first experiences a sore throat and then begins to cough and get other symptoms. Gramps stays in bed, phones work, and generally avoids doing anything till he is better. The only people Gramps will share his flu with are those he comes in contact with, but that contact is limited because of the symptoms. This is why Gramps' flu does not spread to the entire country and only 9m people catch it. Our behaviours with the flu are a natural quarantine process.
When we say Corona is asymptomatic, that means you can have it but not have any symptoms. You will go to work, kiss your girlfriend, touch things in public places, and share your germs to everyone around, and all completely unwillingly because you still don't know that you have it. By the time you start getting symptoms, it's too late. You've given it to a shit load of other people.
So, without any of these measures we are being encouraged to take, it will spread everywhere. Now, it won't be only 9m people getting sick in the US, it will be 300m. A 3.2% mortality rate on that many sick people equates to 10 million dead Americans.
Then there are the other factors which come with a pandemic.
Strain on health industry and the economy, the list goes on and on and on and on. The potential for disaster is huge.
There's a reason our best scientists are all over this. It's not to make money or any of the other reasons the dumbest people on the internet are spreading far more than Corona itself. Stop being an ignorant tinfoil who believes in the nonsense other stupid people on the internet are sharing. Learn how to discern what is good information and what is garbage. If you can do that, you will realise Corona is serious but not a reason for huge panic...yet. If we do the right things and do not listen to morons, we will contain it.
I was there for AIDS. There were morons back then too. It wasn't till everyone started dying that they took it a little more seriously. Don't wait for it to spread too far and for millions to die before YOU begin taking it seriously.
